32 Evening The Odds

“You need to show me where the crystal node is, and quickly. There’s something I have to do.”

“We know,” responded the impressive laminium ball captain, Steel, his chest puffed out, pride at the job they’d done obvious, despite their losses. “Send out a message for reinforcements, after all that is the point of all this.”

“Yes, yes,” replied the master mantra maker, “but there’s something else I must do before all that... something that might improve the odds for those fighting across the planet, almost immediately.”

That caught the attention of all those around him, including Steel, Jar Man, DomCon, Nurse Conscience, the rest of the dragons and the human contingent.

“Do tell,” asked Jar Man, as they marched swiftly towards their destination, feeling assured of their safety because they’d already checked the dead and dying.

Comfortable amongst friends, which was how he regarded all these beings after everything they’d been through, Gee Tee went on to explain about splicing the mantra together with Tank, much to everyone else’s amazement, with all of the dragons there knowing exactly how illegal and dangerous such a thing was, and the humans finding the details of the story absolutely fascinating.

“And you have the mantra here with you?” asked DomCon, more than a little taken aback at what the old shopkeeper had revealed to them.

“I do,” replied the master mantra maker, firmly slapping the huge natural pouch circling his massive rotund belly.

“That’s quite a risk you’re taking, keeping it on you,” suggested Steel. “What would have happened, had you been struck with magic? Would it have ignited the mantra?”

“Maybe,” said the shopkeeper casually, “I’ll guess we’ll never know.”

All the beings accompanying the legendary mantra fanatic exhaled in relief, all turning to look at each other, all relieved not to have found out the hard way whether or not that would have been the case, whilst their leader continued without a care in the world. Strange and unusual circumstances they found themselves in.

Stamping in, around, over and in the case of the human contingent, sometimes on the discarded naga and dragon corpses littering the huge stone corridors, careful not to slip in the slick wet blood, Gee Tee’s dysfunctional group of heroes neared the exotic looking, even by dragon standards, crystal node, made even more eerie by the lack of lighting and those deceased operators that still slumped against their broken terminals, amongst which sat at least one imposter.

“What do we need to do first?” asked Jar Man, eager to help out.

“We... don’t do anything. I... need to check the integrity of the node, make sure there are no traps and then integrate the spliced mantra, after which I can broadcast it worldwide, hopefully stunning all of their kind both above and below ground. There’ll be no way of knowing if it’s worked of course, but we’ll just have to cross our fingers and hope.”

“Shouldn’t we broadcast the distress call first and let the world know where we are and just what’s going on?” observed Nurse Conscience, sceptically.
